I've been reading a great book that explores the Symphony from its earliest examples up to the present day. The Cambridge Companion to the Symphony is edited by Julian Horton. Part one gives an historical overview of the genre. Part two consists of studies in symphonic analysis.
Of particular interest to forum members is 'The Symphony since Mahler: National and international trends' by the Nielsen authority David Fanning. To quote Fanning 'Nielsen and Sibelius stand head and shoulders above their symphonic contemporaries because they not only asked fundamental questions of the symphony and its idealist conceptions but also proposed hard-won solutions that neither leant on the crutches of delusion nor represented a lowering of sights. In effect they built in, and dealt with, the negativity that German symphonists in the wake of Mahler found disabling'.
In section 12 'Symphony/antiphony: Formal strategies in the twentieth-Century Symphony' Daniel M Grimley discusses The Sibelius fourth symphony. Although highly technical, I found it most absorbing--as indeed is the whole book--kp
