Henry Fogel, writing in the American magazine Fanfare, has welcomed Hannu Jurmu’s first Sibelius song disc (Naxos 8.570019) in terms that can safely be described as unequivocal: ‘Hannu Jurmu’s tenor is hard-toned, particularly thin at the bottom of its register, and completely lacks warmth or any liquid. It sounds almost hoarse at times, and his inability to float any kind of line results in something that occasionally approaches Sprechtstimme [sic]. This is singularly unattractive singing, and quite surprising to find on a label like Naxos… I felt nothing so much as astonishment as I listened to the toneless emission of constricted, throaty sound from Jurmo [sic]. Somero’s piano-playing is more than adequate, but it doesn’t really matter… Almost any recording of Sibelius songs would be preferable to this one.’
– Opinions, anyone?
