Looks like a good concert, indeed. Have you heard Volmer's Adelaide recordings of all the symphonies? I remember years ago, Kyoko Takezawa played the Humoresques in London most excellently, so I would have high hoped for her Bartók too.

No I haven't. It's a pity that our local CD store don't import ABC Classics recordings and I don't have a credit card yet.

I'll try to borrow my friend's Naxos Music Library account to see how Volmer shapes the music.

It's not bad. The opening is very promising but in the second half of the first movement he starts out too fast to allow what follows to be genuinely progressive - and the playing gets a bit scrappier at that point too (nor unacceptably so, overall), as if they had decided to do long takes in order to maintain the naturalness of the accelerando and thus had to accept some flaws. The slow movement is pretty much OK if you don't mind your pizzicato strings very spread out - for me it's far too much, often almost like a non-resonant harp. The finale is effective enough. Quite reverberant sound.

Concert performances conducted by Kurkikohtaus bring out much more of an epic feel to the music, though.

The whole performance is identical to the A.S.O. one, except some minor flaws.

First movement gets solid opening. But as Andrew indicated, Volmer tends to accelerate in the second of the first movement, the strings went too fast that made the orchestra sounds chaotic. Besides, woodwind (especially flutes) out of tune at times and sounds scrappy all night.

Second movement mostly fine.

Finale started too fast to my taste but I'm fine with it. Trumpets missed some cues before the six blows. The blows were steady but not as expansive as Kurk's.

In all, a fine performance except for the woodwind playing.
