Got hold of a most interesting CD. Choral music by JS. includes Saarella Palaa [Fire on the Island' [1895, arr.1904] which is the title of the CD. The Dominante Choir is directed by Seppo Murto.
Most of the pieces are new to me, apart from'Rakastava' [The Lover] JS 160C, 1893 rev. 1898. Anyone only familier with the later orchestral version should investigate this. The disc also includes two other pieces that I do know. 'Sydameni Laulu' [Song of my Heart] 1898, arr.1904 and of course 'Finlandia Hymn', 1899, arr. 1948. The disc contains some delightful discoveries including 'Men from Land and Sea' op.65a, 1911 and even three Italian Folk Song arrangements, JS99 [1897-98] The soloists are Monica Groop, Jorma Hynninen, Folke Grasbeck and Harri Viitanen. Strongly recommended--kp

BIS- 1889

Saarella palaa itself is vaguely familiar. It might have been in the school song book.
OK
Lyrics are from Kanteletar

Lyrics, dealing with a bride and groom:

Saarella palaa.
Tuli saarella palavi.
Kenpä tuolla tulta poltti?
Sulho tuolla tulta poltti.
Mitä sulho raatelevi?
Korjoansa kirjottavi.
Mitä tuolla korjasella?
Neittä tuolla korjasella.
Mitä neito raatelevi?
Neito kultakangasta kutoo,
hopeaista helkyttää.

A huge part of Kanteletar is wedding songs.

Saarella Palaa and some other a capella songs are on disc 10 of the BIS Essential Sibelius box.

But the one disc Fire On The Island is quite good. Not that I am religious, but the hymns, such as Soi kunniaksi luojan bring me nostalgia for school days.

On that CD is a hymn all grade school teachers had to be able to play on the pump organ in the class room (1960s). The schoolday began with a hymn.
