Thanks for drawing attention to this forth coming book Tapkaara. This is news to me, but I do know that Prof. Goss is a leading authority on Sibelius. She is based at the University of Georgia and was for some time Editor-in-chief of the complete Sibelius edition. I do have her highly enjoyable book 'Jean Sibelius and Olin Downes' so I will try and get hold of this new book when it becomes available.--kp

The review on that page leaves much to be desired...

"Until now, classical music listeners have not had an adequate context in which to place Sibelius's well-known and much-performed works..." - James Hepokoski, Yale University

While I'm sure the book is fine, what makes the reviewer think that listeners do not understand the context of Sibelius' works? I would dare say that the context in which Sibelius' works are written is better understood than with moth composers.

Yesterday I was in my local music bookshop and had a quick look at Glenda Goss's new biography of Sibelius. It has an attractive turn of the century art nouveau sleeve. It is a hefty book in all senses and the retail price is around £38. My impression is that this book focuses on discussing Sibelius in the context of Finnish culture, politics and history during the 1880-1960 period. I looked up a couple of individual pieces of music and found the commentary on them sketchy. So it seems that close discussion of the music in this work has been compressed to provide space for broader issues. This is an observation, not a criticism. Anyone with a serious interest in Sibelius will want to at least have a look.
