I have always admired the great conductor Fritz Reiner and often regret that he did not go near Sibelius. Certainly I have never seen any recordings.
Therefore it was great to discover recently that Reiner actually gave a Sibelius memorial concert in the autumn of 1957 with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in which the maestro directed Sibelius's 4th and 5th Symphonies plus Finlandia. By all accounts Reiner gutted his audience emotionally.
What a shame the concert does not seem to have been recorded.--kullervopete.

A conductor's conductor, a monument to an era.

To my ear, the definitive sound of Richard Strauss, I can imagine nothing better.

dj mentions the Chicago Brass. Listen to the opening of Richard Strauss's 'Also Sprach Zarathustra' recorded by Reiner in 1962.
The fantastic trumpet of Adolph 'Bud' Herseth, principle with the Chicago Symphony from 1948 until his retirement in 2001. Rimsky-Korsakov 'Scheherazade' [1958] and Rossini Overtures [1960]
What an orchestra under Reiner, just imagine a Sibelius 5 from Reiner in 'Living Stereo'.--kullervopete.

A 5th by Reiner and the Chicago Phil would have been something. I cherish his recording of Pictures at an Exhibition.

I bet Reiner's Sibelius would have been thrilling, to say the very least. I agree that his Strauss recordings are magnificent.

So he performed Sibelius but never recorded him? Not fair...

check the 1954 one too. organ is a bit off pitch, but the intro may be better than the newer one.
