I just realized that the Seventh symphony comes very close to quoting the First toward the end, when the massed strings soar up and leave the rest of the orchestra behind. Now I can almost hear the lonely clarinet melody having its swansong of sorts. Sadly I don't have any scores, but still, does anyone else see it, or am I just deluding myself?

Interesting observation World Violist, I had never thought of that myself but I see what you mean. I once read somewhere that Sibelius confirmed that their was a connection running all through his symphonies, but he never revealed what it was.--kp

...a connection running through...

Well maybe that would be the S-motif again - not just in the symphonies either.
(If anyone is in any doubt, check out Harri M's main post about the S-motif!) (
