With all the fuss about the 50th anniversary of Sibelius's death, and then the 90th anniversary of Finnish independence, let's not forget that today, 8th December, is Sibelius's birthday. I for one shall be raising a glass to him later on!

Hear Hear!
I have just played 'Song Of The Earth' in tribute. Its been a good year for Sibs music with some great performances, a few of which I have been fortunate enough to attend. I noticed the other day that we now have The Chopin International Airport in Poland, in England, Liverpool has The John Lennon Airport--lets all campaign for Helsinki's Airport to be renamed 'The Jean Sibelius International Airport!--kullervopete.

I was away at a conference from Thursday through till Saturday, the 8th, today... with all the travelling, I had completely forgotten...

First of all, to all members... do not hesitate to post announcements of these anniversaries every year, even though it may seem repetitive. It is a useful resource and reminder for those of us who may simply forget... I would have been so upset if I had realized this tomorrow...

Secondly, on a personal note, I travelled 460km by slow Czech trains, it took 8 hours, arriving home at 21:30... to this fantasitic reminder! What a joy.

Vodka for me.

Anyone who cares for a "free post", here's your chance so let's all wish Sibelius a very happy 143rd birthday in 2008!

I will most certainly drink to that. In fact I celebrated Sibelius's birthday today by playing Barbirolli's live broadcast of the Fifth Symphony from 1968. My review can be seen on 'Whats that lurking in your Cd player'

I'll be raising a glass of... apple juice...

A very happy birthday to our dear Sibbe!

EDIT: So I played a trombone for the first time today... quite the coincidence, I think. I never thought about trying the big theme from the Seventh symphony, but appropriate nevertheless. Very Happy
