In the UK Sibelius Society's Newsletter No. 60 there is an interesting article written by Alan Senior about an encounter between John Foulds and Sibelius, and Foulds' retelling of his memories of this meeting. I quote (Foulds):
Had but Scriabin, with his immensely lofty devic contacts, possessed the sheer intellectual musical power of Sibelius; had but Sibelius the soul-force to shake off the lower devic vibrations and transcend those of even country, continent, hemisphere; and with consciousness ego-free range the glorious devic-worlds which Scriabin contacted, what unimaginable splendours would have been ours.
Mr. Senior rightly (in my opinion) concludes that Foulds "missed the mark" and "drastically failed to realise that Sibelius was primarily concerned with symphonic form in his quest for higher, absolute music."
Nevertheless, an interesting quote and comparison.
