I've just got the Bridgewater Hall concert imf. for winter 2014-15. Sir Mark Elder is conducting Sibelius fifth symphony with the Halle on Thursday 6th November. On Saturday 22nd November Wyn Davies conducts Sibelius's 'Swan of Tuonela' and 'Lemminkainen's Return', again with the Halle. Finally something of a pleasant surprise. The Manchester Camerata are giving a New Years Day Viennese gala on 1st January, 2015 conducted by Alexandre Bloch. Included in the programme is Sibelius's miniature masterpiece 'Valse Triste' I'm not sure just what the Viennese connection is apart from it being a sad Waltz, but well done--VPO please note-- Wink kp

Following up on my last post, it seems that the Vienna Philharmonic had planned to include Sibelius 'Valse triste' in its New Year concert, 2015. Now it appears that the piece will not now be included. They claim that Breitkopf and Hartel were demanding to high a fee! This smells like a snub to me. Thankfully Valse triste will be performed in Manchester [see below] --kp

I did enjoy the VPO's New years day concert, but I missed 'Valse triste'. The Sibelius would appear to have been replaced with a piece by Danish composer Hans Christian Lumbye--kp
