Right now, i'm enjoying the mahler 2 with bernstein/nypo from the 60's.
Being a trumpeter myself, i find the playing of William Vacchiano (principal), and John Ware (asst.) nicely done on this.

(I was wondering when a thread like this would surface here... It seems to be a popular feature of every music forum.)
I'm presently going through all the Sibelius 7th recordings I can get my hands on for the sake of studying all the possible tempi and tempo relations that can happen in this piece, for better or for worse. _________________

I was just called on three days notice to fill in with two orchestras so I have some of that repertoire playing in the background as I prepare.
Tchaikovsky 4
Haydn 97 (unfortunately) |

I had a loan DVD from my wifes friend.. Bruckner:8th/Karajan/Bpo/live from later 80's.
It is amazing. Could someone tell me where the hell I get one for myself or two for good? It seems that all the DVDs out there are in Japan only.. |

I am currently reviewing all my Sibelius Violin Concerto recordings.
As I've stated elsewhere, my favourite is Kuusisto - Segerstam, and I usually just listen to that one so often that I can't even remember the last time I've turned on my other ones. So I had a little mini-festival and listened to them all:
Kuusisto - Segerstam - Helsinki (Arenan, are you playing on this?)
Fried - Kamu - Helsinki
Haendel - Berglund - Bournemouth
Oistrach - Ormandy - Philadelphia (blech )
Mutter - Karajan - Berlin
Spitkova - Dohnanyi - Bratislava Radio (a bargain 2cd set with 4 concertos on it, absolutely terrible)
I listened to them all in a row and... well, you can probably guess what I was doing.
Don't forget to check out the videos of the violin concerto here at the Forum!

DJ :
Thanks for the link but I am searching The Epos conducted by Karajan BUT PLAYED BY THE BERLIN PHILHARMONIC! Or is this somekind of an multicameral bootleg!?
I think this search continues... Keep me posted!
And Kurkikohtaus: No. And that is the most Sibelian record out there on concerto. |

I have finished my overview of all the Sibelius Violin Concertos I could get my hands on, I am now trying to discard all that noise from my brain and find my own way. Our concert is on April 27th featuring Concertmaster Fumihito Terada. You are all invited, EasyJet and SmartWings flies to CZE from London very cheap...
So now that my CD player has some free time, I've been putting on some mood music, Miles Davis, Kind of Blue. _________________

I had a go at Bruckner 4th yesterday, Ormandy and Philadelphia from the 60's... I for one could never really hear, describe or recognize that "Philadelphia Sound"... Perhaps it is something that one must hear live, or at least on vinyl. _________________

the sound comes from gilbert johnson's (trumpet) vibrato and from the addition of violas to the 2nd violin parts (i think), and marcel tabuteau's oboe playing.
i prefer that sound with that orchestra, but they sounded good on muti recordings, too...and he didn't do it that way nor had those principal players.

Interesting comments, dj, very specific. Usually when talking about the Philadelphia sound, I hear words like "lush strings" and "sheen", something I've ne'er quite picked-up on through recordings.

Wow, Gil Johnson... there's a name I haven't thought about in a long time.
The former principal trumpet of the Toronto Symphony, Larry Weekes (who died tragically in the mid 90's by crashing a plane that he built) studied with Gil Johnson. While still a student, he subbed-in with the Philadelphia Orchestra during a concert of Pictures at an Exhibition, in which Gil Johnson had problems with the opening Promenade.
Since that day, Larry Weekes was not able to play the Promenade cleanly, there were always issue, I actually attended a TSO concert where it was an absolute cack-fest. He handed it over to the associate on the next night. _________________

I brought home a water pipe (Sheesha) from my recent holiday in Egypt... (It's for fruity tobacco...)

I set it up for the first time yesterday and contemplated what music to enjoy along with it. Since all three of my middle-eastern / indian music CDs are in my other apartment in Prague, I reached for Sibelius' 6th, Helskinki-Berglund.
Aside from the too-heavy-for-my-taste finale, I find his "slower" tempos very comfortable, in that he seems to give special care to each motive, each motive seems alive and "shaped".
Good smoking music. _________________

A quick internet search has revealed that a "Sheesha" (or Shisha) and a "Hookah" are the same thing.
The tobaccos are about 20% tobacco and 80% fruit molasses. They come wrapped in plastic to preserve the moistness and are packaged in colourful little boxes that look better suited for candy...

Do you think Sibelius would have had a go with one of these? _________________
