Potentially interesting. And a very logical coupling.

I had high hopes for Robert Spano's new disc of Sibelius 6 and 7 plus Tapiola with Atlanta SO. I had greatly enjoyed his 'Kullervo'.

I'm afraid I can't be enthusiastic about the performances of the two symphonies. The sixth opens well enough but the middle section sounds too rushed for my taste. The second movement starts ok, but goes down hill, sounding [and I've said this before] like Tchaikovsky on a bad day. Put simply it lacks reticence. The poco vivace is more successful with crisp rhythms. The last movement generates great excitement, but for me is just too hard driven.
Nor sadly could Spano's account of the one movement seventh rise much above the routine. The recorded quality is not ideal [slightly base boomy] earlier I had been listening to vintage RCA Living Stereo with Munch and Boston SO in Mendelssohn symphonies 4 and 5 [superb sound stage]
Tapiola was much better and I greatly enjoyed this performance clocking in at 19'-45 All in all I cannot recommend this disc--kp

Ah, Lintu. Too late to get an autograph. He's not coming by our puddle backwoods town for a few more seasons.

He conducted the 5th here. My only decent Sibelius for the last 10 years.

Ades was unknown, but it's quite good "for a modern work." Laughing

Ades is a keen Sibelian. He conducted Kullervo a few years back at the Proms in London--kp

This is assumedly three of the four fragments from "The Unknown Sibelius" BIS release, yes? (which states, empahtically, that they aren't from the 8th symphony at all...)

There is a 3 disc set of Ormandy on Japanese Sony. Anyone know what's on it?

I've collected two discs of Japanese RCA Ormandy, but only burned official Arkiv copies.

Ok, thanks, have 2 and 7 and the RCA.

Have Storgårds on order. Maybe I can hold off opening it till May. I turn 60 then, someone can wrap it for me. Laughing

Lemminkäinen and the Maidens & Lemminkäinen in Tuonela are previously unreleased, although recorded some years ago.

The shorter two and The Wood-Nymph have been out on BIS-1645 'Sound of Sibelius' (surround) and the Wood-Nymph also in Box 1 of the Edition (normal stereo), respectively, but have been remixed for this release.
