A big hello to all of you,
after three years as a guest I finally made it...
Now my question...I hope that somebody can answer me. In a preliminary worklist of Sibelius (around 1911) the work 'Näcken' was part of 6 Lieder opus 4 (see Dahlströms Werkverzeichnis p. 689) but the other 5 Lieder weren't mentioned. Does somebody know the rest of the lieder (perhaps three of them are the Christmas songs opus 1 No. 3 to 5)? As we know opus 4 was later given to the string quartet in B flat major.

Look for 8 songs Opus 57, BIS, Monica Groop. The Essential Sibelius box has: Näcken and I am a tree.

Hi nadorn and a warm welcome to the forum. You pose a tricky question. I do know that Sibelius was invited by Martin Wegelius in 1888 to contribute with the incidental music to 'Nacken' [The Watersprite] by G. Wennerberg. Sibelius contributed the second of six musical pieces [Song from 'Nacken' JS 138--kp

Ah, you want the original 6. I would look at the 8 in Opus 57 where Näcken the song was published.

To avoid irritations: There are two "Näcken" works by Sibelius. The song with words by Josephson opus 57 no. 8 and the tableaumusic by Wennerberg for speaker, soprano, violin, cello and piano JS 138, which Sibelius composed with his teacher Wegelius in 1888. Sibelius was very uncertain in giving his works opusnumbers. So "Näcken" JS 138 was first given an opus-number 6 in 1896, opus 7 in 1897 and was finally listed as a work without opusnumber in 1912. In a preliminary worklist in 1911 "Näcken" was related to "6 Lieder" opus 4. Sibelius often collected songs under one opus number but "Näcken" JS 138 in my opinion is not a real song for voie and piano. I'm very curious to find out the other five songs which Sibelius collected in 1911 together with "Näcken". Perhaps Sibelius has never written down the content of his planned opus 4, so we can never get an answer to this question.

Hi nadorn and welcome from me too!

Very interesting topic, the early opus lists. I'll be seeing Fabian Dahlström next week and can try to ask him then if he has any further information. I suspect not, though: he is very thorough and would almost certainly have put any known details in the big blue book.

I'm currently away from my desk and so can't look in the book but I wonder spontaneously if the other items were the pieces that Wegelius wrote. I believe there were 6 in total.

Katarina Karneus

I always pick up some Cd's and LP's around Christmas. Just played Sibelius Songs with Katarina Karneus [mezzo-soprano] and Julius Drake [piano] includes a fine account of 'Nacken' op 57, No. 8. Lots of goodies including 'Illalle' op 17, No.6 and 'Svarta rosor from op 36.
One of my favourites 'Sav sav, susa' --kp
