I am sure we have all listened to this concerto.
When I listen to the top ten I can usually guess if the soloist is male or female by the way the violin is played.
I am not always correct!
Do we all have a particular favourite; I have generally preferred the female approach to Sibelius violin concerto.
Suggestions, recommendations please!

Hi Dorian, I'm not sure about guessing correctly a male or female soloist but right from the beginning, the fair [CENSORED] have made their mark on this concerto. Ginette Neveu's reading under Walter Susskind is wonderful though the orchestral accompaniment could be better. I wonder if you could guess the soloist here playing with almost masculine strength, passion and stamina. I also have a soft spot for Ida Haendel both in her EMI account with Berglund and a recently issued live recording with Czech PO under Karel Ancerl from 1957. I wish that I could get hold of a rare performance from Guila Bustabo [see my post 'Guila Bustabo' in this section] I think that Isac Stern takes some beating with Beecham. Heifetz with either Beecham or Walter Haendl plus dozens more! - Smile kp

With regard to this concerto and gender, for me it is not such an issue if the soloist is male or female, but if the soloist can bring out what I believe to be a very feminine quality that I hear in the whole piece.

What if the performer is a male in drag? Could you guess then?

You've seen it played by a male in drag?
I hope it's on YouTube!
