Can we have more than one vote? Or maybe different poll for genres. like symphonic, opera, etc? |

Just give it a go, but let's not get into categories too much. Not that I want to set any stringent rules, but for the purposes of a consise and truly representative list, let's say one or two choices maximum. So... ? _________________

Then for my favourite I would have to go with none other than Beethoven. |

Thanks for your votes, fellows. You will notice that I have edited my first post, it now shows Beethoven above Dvorak.
Ainola, you actually gave me a nice little surprise there. I never would have guessed that you would choose Beethoven. No sarcasm intended, honestly, I never would have guessed. _________________

My top three favorite composers are:
1. Akira Ifukube
2, Jean Sibelius
3. Aram Khachaturian
Akira Ifukube (1914 - 2006) was a Japanese composer. I am the webmaster of Only registered users can see links on this forum! Register or Login on forum! | , the internet's largest English language resource about this composer, for anyone who is interested.

Sorry the link didn't work the first time...there was a comma that attached itself to the URL. It works now.
Yes, Ifukube is best known as a film composer, in particular, for the Godzilla movies. But he was also one of the most respected and loved of all Japanese composers and composed a large body of concert compositions including concertos, symphonies, ballets, chamber works, etc.
His style relies heavily on Japanese traditional music and also music of the Ainu, an indigionous race that lives in northern Japan. He was something of a minimalist, famous for his use of ostinatos. He liked the big orchestral sound and often used explosively violent percussion in many of his works.

No, He did not have any Ainu ancestory, but he grew up in Otofuke, Hokkaido which a had a huge Ainu population. So, from an early age, he was exposed to their culture, which he revered, and especially loved their traditional music.
You can read about him more at my website...just click on the Biography page. _________________ "Music is not philosophy."

HMV Japan (www.hmv.co.jp) is actually the best place to find Ifukube recordings. Click on this link to see what's currently available:

There are two CDs featuring Ifukube's music available on Naxos, so that would be a good place to start for beginners as Naxos is a budget label. _________________ "Music is not philosophy."

Stravinsky.
I always loved Stravinsky's music since I first encountered The Firebird Suite as a child. I didn't connect with Sibelius until I was in my 20s. |

I thought about this and can't think of just one other that I like more than the rest. There are a lot of others I like, not necessarily the "3 Bs." I just started exploring Stravinsky. I like the other big Scandanavian ones: Stennhammer, Nielsen, and Tubin. There are many others and sub-genres too. |

Hello Badger and welcome back.
Mark G. Simon, I've updated the list at the top of the thread, Stravinsky is now there. _________________

Badger just made a reference to something that always presses my "show off" button.
I'm such a retiring person, otherwise...
So here's a quick off-thread question: who ARE the three B's?
(Yes, it is a trick question.) |

I always understood the "3 B's" to be Bach, Beethoven and Brahms...
... as opposed to the "Killer B's", Bonds-Bagwell-Biggio of the Pittsburg Pirates, early 90's?
So as some guy has stated this to be a trick question, I'm wondering what his answer is? _________________
