Elisabeth Soderstrom 1927-2009

Sad to see that the Swedish soprano Elisabeth Soderstrom died on November 20, 2009. Her Sibelius song set, recorded with Vladimir Ashkenazy at the piano took a Gramophone solo vocal award. By chance Christopher Nupen's 1984 film 'Sibelius : The early years, maturity and silence is being shown on BBC 4. I watched the first part last night. It was all the more moving watching Soderstrom singing Sibelius's opus 17 orchestral arrangement 'Se'n har jag ej fragat mera' [Since then I have questioned no further] expressing the transience of life. A great artist.--kp

I noticed she had passed away some time ago. I too remembered her from the Nupen Sibelius video, also with very fond memories of "Since then I have questioned no further." It was moving then, and it's all the more moving now when I think of that segment.

I have some recordings with her singing the Sibelius songs and they don't sound convincing or good at all Shocked (They're from a complete set published by Decca, with the male singer Krause, who sings most of the songs.)
Singers are known for having good and bad days, so I'm very curious of what label published the award recording you mentioned.

Seems that you have the winning album! I must say that I do prefer Soile Isokoskii with Segerstam on Ondine. Apart from Luonnotar the disc includes 'Soluppgang' with orchestra.--kp

Oh Embarassed

It's quite a funny album actually, since the male singer sings like 95% of all the songs, (and does so perfectly), but Sibelius wrote specifically for female singers most of the time. It's like the original plan was for Södeström to sing at least half of the songs, but then she had some problems with her voice. I'm not meaning to be rude at this thread by shouting out low-points of a recently deceased artist's career, but just warning you if you're fans of hers, because this set isn't what it seems.

I know what you mean, Saturnus… and actually I think that Krause'e earlier recordings (also on Decca), though far less comprehensive, show his voice in better form as well.
