The SD Symphony went bankrupt in 1997, I think it was. They languished for a while until Irwin Jacob, the founder of Qualcomm (a San Diego based-company) gave the symphony the single largest donation in history (for a symphony) of $120 million to get them back on their feet.
So, they have been active for quite a while now under their conductor Jahja Ling. It's actually a very good symphony, some even say it's one of the best in the US.
So, they are indeed in business, and performing Sibelius next season...yes!!!
