Maestro conducts a Finnish menu this week (Finlandia as encore, independence day Saturday). As 78 years old he still have his legendary style.

I talked with him about Finlandia horn part and 2nd symfonia tuba part and original score. He said that original has burnt and the score was reconstructed from parts which maybe had many chanches...

I attended a masterclass with Jorma Panula in 1999 in Ottawa, Canada with the National Arts Centre Orchestra (where Pinchas Zuckerman) is Music Director.

Maestro Panula was quite reserved for most of his teaching, giving a few technical pointers here and there. It was after the sessions that he "came alive", when we reviewed videotapes of all our mistakes. I learned a lot that week.

The highlight of the course was Stravinsky's Dumbarton Oaks, a piece that Mr. Panula was very enthusiastic about and is a great load of fun to conduct.

The original score of the Second is fire damaged, but not completely lost: it is in the Sibelius Museum in Turku. Most of the damaged parts are at the tops and bottoms of pages (flutes, double basses), so the tuba part should be more or less complete. But there were some noticeable revisions after the first performance(s) - as detailed in the JSW edition. Having said that, I don't necessarily agree with the JSW edition's conclusion that the original score had twelve extra bars in the slow movement (first appearance of the 'Christus' theme). After examining the manuscript (the pages are badly out of order in Turku) with a view to continuity and handwriting, it looks rather as if he made two separate attempt at scoring the same passage.
