Snöfrid is one of Sibelius's must unjustly overlooked works. I love this piece; it's one of Sibelius's most "Wagnerian" scores, much like the Wood-Nymph.
The cantata appears on three recording that I know of. They are:
Osmo Vänskä/Lahti
Eri Klas/Finnish National Opera Chorus and Orchestra
Paavo Järvi/National Orchestra of Estonia
Of the three, Vänskä is the best performed and best recorded. Klas comes second; his reading is very powerful, but the recorded sound pales in comparison to Vänskä's recording. Järvi's performance is similar to Klas, but the sound is one dimensional (even more so than Klas) on this recording.
What is the general opinion of this piece in the forum? I think it would go over very well in the concert hall; it has an easy likeablilty that could convert most anti-Sibelians!
