Hi all,

I just came across this series of concerts that the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra are doing in September - an epic Sibelius Cycle. They are doing all sorts of things from ALL the Symphonies along with lesser known (but my personal favourites) stuff like The Oceanides and the UK premiere of Three Symphonic Pieces for cello and orchestra.

It's even conducted by a Finnish conductor with Finnish soloists - you can't get more authentic than that!

I listened with great interest the other day to the broadcast of the UK premier of 'Three Symphonic Pieces' for Cello and Orchestra by Sibelius. Performed by Martti Rousi with The City of Birmingham Symphony under chief conductor Sakari Oramo.
Andrew B was right, the first piece is indeed 'Malinconia' which Sibelius originally wrote for cello and piano in 1901 with a dedication to Georg Scheevoigt. I know that Andrew expressed serious reservations that this piece was not suitable for orchestral treatment. In the event Andrews concerns, at least for me seem to have been unfounded. The orchestration undertaken by Jouni Kaipainen is most sucessful. The other two pieces are 'Devotion' and 'Cantique' dating from 1914-15 [0pus 77] arranged for violin or cello/piano and subsequently orchestrated by Sibelius himself. They do work well with 'Malinconia' and after the melancholic and somewhat dark first two pieces the shafts of sunlight coming through 'Cantique' are most telling.
This work as been especially created by Sakari Oramo for this concert and I think that it has been a resounding success. Mr. Oramo has described them as a compilation and goes on to say that 'they are amazing little pieces, they are maybe music in the world of the 6th Symphony'.
I sincerely hope that these pieces, indeed almost a Concertino will find their way into the repertoire. I cannot get this music out of my head, a sure indicator for me of something special.--kullervopete.

Interesting programme planning coming up at Birmingham's Symphony Hall on Thursday 20th June, 2013. Edward Gardner conducts the Birmingham orchestra in Sibelius third Symphony, Lutoslawski's 'Chantefleurs et Chantefables, Sibelius 'Luonnotar' and Lutoslawski's third Symphony. [Lucy Crowe Soprano] Wouldn't mind a run up there, will be broadcast live--kp
