and click on 'Preface of the study score', you get a tremendous essay (in German and English) by Glenda Dawn Goss, who edited the new critical Breitkopf/JSW edition of Kullervo. Strongly recommended!

First of all, andrew b, congrats on your 50th post and new rank!

I will admit that I've never heard Kullervo nor have I ever seen a score. In my university years I just never got around to it, and now I'm keeping it "in reserve" on purpose, so that I can "discover" this very piece when I hit 40 (or so). I it will be like a special birthday gift to myself!

Hey Kurkikohtaus, I joined this forum specifically to make sure you got a superb performance of this for your first hearing, but as I typed out one version of this post after the other, I couldn't help thinking each time "He really doesn't need to hear this. He already knows." Pffft.

So much for my sense of self-importance! But I will say this, I prefer people like Lachenmann and Xenakis, as you know--and I certainly prefer the fourth symphony of Sibelius to all the rest--but there's something really alluring about this Kullervo thing. Given my tastes, I'd think that after the first couple of hearings of this, I'd get over it; but I don't. I could put this on this minute and be wholly swept up in this thing.
